Essential oils, or ‘essences’ as they are also called, are highly concentrated substances volatile oil oils are odoriferous liquids extracted from various parts of aromatic plants and trees.
 
They are usually captured by  simple expression(cold press process) or pressure(steam,water,dry distillation process), a process whose origins can be traced back to ancient Mesopotamia. Unlike ordinary vegetable oils, such as corn and olive, plant essences are highly volatile and will evaporate if left in the open air.
The chemistry of essential oils is complex. Most consist of hundreds of components, such as terpenes, alcohols, aldehydes, and esters. Moreover, due to their tiny molecular structure, essential oils applied to the skin can be absorbed into the bloodstream.

Fragrances and Flavours Association of India (FAFAI) is the national apex body of the players in the Fragrances & Flavours segment. The body was formed in 1949 by a few traders from the segment, with the key objective to promote the sector.

Today, with 800 members, the body, apart from manufacturers and dealers from the Fragrances & Flavours industry, includes those that are from Aroma Chemicals, Natural Essential Oils as well as allied fields.

The association regularly conducts biennial seminars across India, on various topics that are relevant to the Fragrances & Flavours and allied industries.

According to Frost & Sullivan India, globally, the Fragrances & Flavours segment is estimated to be $17.8 billion industry of which the top five players account for 40 per cent of the market. The five largest companies in the industry are Givaudan, International Flavours & Fragrances (IFF), Firmenich, Symrise and Quest International. Japanese firm, Takasago, the sixth largest player, has revenues close to that of QuestInternational.


The Indian Fragrances and Flavours industry has been growing rapidly following liberalisation. The global
economic slowdown did not have any impact on the industry; instead, it clocked a growth rate of 12 -15 per cent. With globalisation, there have been improvements in technology, competition and brand images.


The global industry is looking at India as a future hub for fragrances and flavours, stated Rohit Seth, Joint Secretary, FAFAI, in an interaction over email. Excerpts:

How would you describe the current food fragrances and flavours industryscene in India?

The market for the food fragrances and flavours related products is showing strong growth. The Indian strength lies in the fact that the products are available at competitive prices

What are India’s capabilities in this space? Which are the important flavours and fragrances that are distinct to India?

India's capability in this space pertains to sandal, jasmine and herbal-related fragrances. For flavours, it is about spicebased products since India dominates in production of spices.

What is the total size of this sector and its growth rate?

The total size of the industry including menthol, sandalwood oil and other essential oils is around Rs. 9,000 crore and the estimated growth rate is approximately 12 per cent. The key applications of flavours in the food processing sector include confectionaries, dairy, bakery and snacks among others.

Globally what is India’s stand in the food fragrances and flavours space?

India is a market, which the world is eyeing, so we expect that India is going to place itself at a very commanding position in near future.

Would the country become a hub for contract manufacture of food fragrances and flavours?

India has a good potential to become a hub for manufacturing, especially, for raw materials used by the industry.

What according to you are the visible trends in this industry?

Strong growth is visible for the industry in coming years, going by India‘s inherent strength in the space of spices and development of fragrances. Conventionally, flavours and fragrances are mainly customised in raw materials, which lead to higher pricing of endproducts. The industry is also extremely fragmented and is expected to consolidate in the coming years.

Aromatherapy Essential Oils

One of the nature’s greatest gifts to mankind is the magical properties of Aromatherapy essential oils. Its existence is considered to be very ancient, with a history of 3500 years. Latest research has only recently shown what aroma therapists have known for many ages: “what we smell has a direct impact on how we feel.”


Like the other common senses, the things we smell are transmitted directly to the brain. Research has proved that lavender aroma steps up alpha waves in the back of the head, which is associated with relaxation. That means using lavender helps you to relax. On the other hand, jasmine scent increases beta waves in the front of the head, which has been found to make you feel more alert. You will be on your toes, if you smell jasmine.


The use of aromatherapy essential oils includes inhaling their scent. Aromatherapy is an established system of caring for the body with herbal and botanical oils. Many times, it is the scent that gives the therapeutic value, and other times it works better by making the skin absorbing the oil. Irrespective of how the oil is absorbed into the body, whether through the skin, the mouth, or the nose, essential oils have long been used to help in healing.


This reduces the impact of the oil a bit, but can also prevent harmful adverse reaction. Before you use these oils, just make sure that you take a patch test. Just apply a tiny amount to the inside of your arm and examine it after 24 hours. In case there is no reaction, you are safe in using the oil elsewhere on the body. Use essential oils sparingly and carefully to achieve the maximum benefit.


Here are some common ailments and suggestions for the use of aromatherapy essential oils in treating them. It would be a good idea to find an aroma therapist to help you; so that you can blend you own mixture and achieve the greatest benefit from them.


Allergies: Mix one drop of cypress and one drop of hyssop in the palm of your hand and then apply the mixture to the back of your tongue every few hours to relieve hay fever symptoms.


Backache: Mix equal parts of blue chamomile; birch; rosemary or eucalyptus; ginger or black pepper; lavender; carrier oil. Rub into the affected area after a hot bath, when muscles are relaxed and pores are open.


Nausea or stomachache: Put two drops peppermint oil on a sugar cube and suck the cube slowly. Or, add a few drops of peppermint oil to hot water and drink as a tea.


Headaches: Peppermint, inhaled directly from the bottle, or rubbed with a little carrier oil under the nose and at the temples can be very soothing for headaches.


Cuts, scrapes & scratches: Lavender oil can be applied undiluted to soothe and help heal minor cuts and abrasions.


Anxiety: Lavender, bergamot, Melissa, geranium, and ylang-ylang are great for calming weary nerves. You can mix three or four together. Add to a bath, use in a scent lamp, or massage into the skin with a carrier oil.


Sleep aids: Marjoram, lavender and ylang-ylang in a warm bath can be soothing before bedtime and aids in sleep.


Colds or flu: Blend three parts ravensare, one part naiouli or eucalyptus, one part lemon, one part rosewood, and one part lavender. Add about 50 drops of this mixture to a diffuser, or add 6-8 drops to a bowl of just boiled water, place a towel over your head, bend over the bowl and inhale.


Stress: Lavender and sage are very relaxing. Place a few drops of each on a tissue and leave on the dashboard so the sun can warm it and diffuse it into the air of the car


Arthritis: Add 10 drops each of rosemary and chamomile to a warm bath and soak for 10 minutes.


There are many other essential oils, for treating everything from acne to diabetes to depression. Most oils are not harmful if inhaled, but care should be taken to apply topically on the skin, and never take any essential oil internally without the advice of a skilled professional.






For Inhalation


Add 5 to 10 drops of essential oil into a bowl of steaming water then place a towel over your head and the bowl and inhale the vapor for a few minutes. Feel yourself rejuvenated and free of tension.


For Vaporization


All essential oils are known antiseptic and evaporate easily, thus make very good air-fresheners. Different oils usually create different atmospheres. For example, relaxing Sandalwood or Clary Sage are good for ravishing parties; or cool Peppermint clears your mind when you need to work. Diffusers can be used to make oils diffuse slowly in your working room or living quarters.


As Perfumes


It is very easy to make your own distinctive perfume by skillfully blending different oils. Try blending with different combinations, which can be mixed with a carrier oil or non-fragrant alcohol.

Lemon grass (Cymbopogan flexuosus, family: Poaceae) is an aromatic plant which grows in many parts of tropical and sub-tropical South asia.


In India, the crop is under commercial cultivation along Western Ghats (Maharashtra, Kerala), Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, UP, Assam and foothills of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim.

Lemongrass is one of most important aromatic grass which can become a crop of future India based on experience among many aromatic crop. Reason for same is its application for derivatives like Vitamins which require basic molecule like Citral which is major component of this oil

Botanical Description
Lemon grass is a tall, perennial hedge throwing up dense fascicles of leaves from a short rhizome. Leaves are long, glaucous, green, linear, tapering upwards and along the margins; ligule very short; sheaths terete, those of the barren shoots widened and tightly clasping at the base, others narrow and separating. It is a short day plant and flowers profusely in South India. The inflorescence is a long spike about one meter in length. Flower panicles are 30 to over 60 cm long

Lemon grass oil is distilled from leaves and flowering tops of Lemon grass.

The oil has strong lemon-like odour, due to high percentage ( over 75%) of citral in the oil, which is used as a basic raw material for synthesis  of ß-ionones used for synthesis of a number of useful aromatic compounds and Vitamin - A. Lemon grass oil is thus used as a main substitute for ‘ Cod liver oil’.

Citral itself is used in perfumery for various grades of soaps, detergents, cosmetics, insect repellents, room freshners, ayurvedic preparations and flavour agent for soft drinks.

BOTANICAL NAME: Rosemarinus officinalis

SCENT: Camphoraceous, fresh, penetrating, strong, woody-balsamic.

Volatile oil having , 1.2 - 2% - alpha-pinene, cineol, borneol, camphene, rosemarin.The most important constituents are caffeic acid and its derivatives such as rosmarinic acid.Rosmarin oil contains d-pinene, cineol, borneol, camphene and camphor.

• Antioxidant: A focuse of the extracts of 8 Rosemary clones indicated the antioxidant capacity of volatile oils and plant extracts were closely related to the total phenol content.

• Phytochemicals / Rosmarinic Acid: Studies yield rosmarinic acid, ursolic acid, caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, carnosolic acid, rosmanol, carnosol, diterpenes, among others. Rosmarinic acid is well absorbed from the GI tract and skin. It increases the production of prostaglandin E2 and reduces the production of leukotrine B4 in human polymorphonuclear leucocytes and inhibites the complement system and presents therapeutic potential in the treatment of asthma, spasmogenic disorders, peptic ulcer, inflammatory diseases, cataract, cancer and poor sperm motility.

• Antiinflammatory / Antinociceptive: (1) A study of rosemary essential oil suggests it possesses antiinflammatory and peripheral antinociceptive activities. (2) Study showed the aerial parts of Rosmarinus officinalis possess antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activity and supports the use of the plant in folk medicine.

• Hyperglycemic : A study showed the volatile oil of RO has hyperglycemic and insulin release inhibitory effects in rabbit.

• Antidiabetogenic: Study concluded that RO extracts showed antidiabetogenic effect probably from its potent antioxidant properties.

• Radioprotective: Study of the modulatory influence of Rosemary leaves extract in Swiss albino mice dosed with 3 Gy gamma radiation showed increase in lipid peroxidation and regaining of hematologic parameters. Results suggest the possible radioprotective ability of the rosemary extract.

• Smooth Muscle Relaxant Effect: The effects of volatile oil of Rosmarinus officinalis leaves showed a direct smooth muscle relaxant effect in vitro testing of isolated aortic segments of rabbits. The inhibition of the contractions were dose-dependent and reversible.

• Antibacterial: Study on the antibacterial activity of three selected plants (Rosmarinus officinalis, Origanum majorana and Trigonella foenum-graecum) against beta lactamase-producing E coli and K pneumonia showed all three exhibited relatively low MICs and could be considered strong antibacterials.

• Effect on Morphine Withdrawal Syndrome: Study showed the aqueous and ethanol extracts of aerial parts of Rosmarinus officinalis could diminish morphine withdrawal syndrome in mice.
